Oil Surges Again as Inflation Persists, Fed Faces Pressure, and 5% Yields Change the Market Game

Global financial markets are entering one of the key weeks of September. The main Narrative is shifting from whether the Fed will hike rates to whether this hike will be a one-off move or the beginning of a new Tightening Cycle.

US economic data released over the past week continues to show that inflation is not over. August PPI rose 0.4% MoM and 5.4% YoY, up from 4.8% in the previous month. Meanwhile, CPI increased 0.4% MoM and 3.4% YoY, while Core CPI came in at 2.4% YoY.

The figures were not significantly hotter than expected. However, combined with oil prices moving back above $100 and a still-resilient labor market, the data has been enough for markets to price in an 86–87% probability of a 25 bps Fed rate hike at the September 15–16 meeting.

Let’s look at each asset class 👇

1️⃣ Dollar 💵 | Supported by Rates, but Not Strengthening Without Limits

The Dollar Index strengthened early in the week as markets increased their expectations for a Fed rate hike. The mechanism remains the same: Higher Inflation → Hawkish Fed → Higher Yields → Dollar Support

However, what stands out is that even as US Treasury Yields rose sharply, the Dollar did not strengthen by the same magnitude. One reason is that Tightening is not happening only in the US. The ECB has recently raised rates, while markets are also expecting the Bank of Japan to potentially hike rates.

The Japanese Yen has strengthened by around 4% this month and is trading near its strongest level in seven months.

📌 Takeaway: The Dollar remains supported by Fed rate expectations, but Tightening by other central banks is limiting its upside.

2️⃣ Gold 💰 | Safe Haven Demand Faces Yield Pressure, but the Medium-Term Structure Remains Intact

Gold opened the week lower at around 4,330–4,350 as oil prices surged and markets increased their expectations for a Fed rate hike.

Gold is being pulled in two directions. On one side, tensions in the Middle East, US debt concerns, and financial system risks continue to create Demand for Gold as a Safe Haven. On the other, the US 10Y Yield approaching 5% and expectations for higher Fed rates are significantly increasing the Opportunity Cost of holding Gold.

As a result, Yield pressure remains dominant in the short term, while Gold still has medium-term support from Fiscal and Geopolitical Risk.

📌 Takeaway: Gold is under short-term pressure from Monetary Tightening, but support from Fiscal and Geopolitical Risk remains.

3️⃣ Oil ⛽ | From Commodity to a Macro Shock for Global Markets

Oil is the key asset in this week’s market Narrative. Brent moved back above $107, while WTI rose above $103 after a drone attack forced Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline to suspend operations.

This Oil Rally is different from a typical Demand-driven Rally because it is a Supply Shock, making it an increasingly important factor for inflation and the Fed’s policy decisions.

📌 Takeaway: Oil is shifting from a Commodity story into a Macro Shock that both markets and the Fed need to watch closely.

4️⃣ US Stocks 📈 | Earnings Remain Strong, but 5% Yield Is the New Market Barrier

US stocks are facing a more complex environment. On Friday, the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow rebounded by more than 1% as oil prices temporarily eased, but the broader weekly picture remained weak.

At the same time, the S&P 500 is still up around 12% this year, while Corporate Earnings, particularly in Technology and AI, remain strong. This means corporate Fundamentals have not broken down.

However, with the US 10Y Yield approaching 5%, investors have more alternatives and are starting to question how much return high-P/E stocks need to offer to justify the Risk. This is particularly relevant for Technology, AI, and Growth Stocks, where Valuation relies more heavily on future earnings than Value Stocks.

As a result, the stock market is not being sold off because investors expect an immediate Recession. Instead, the market is experiencing Valuation Compression driven by Earnings Growth vs Higher Discount Rates.

📌 Takeaway: Earnings remain strong, but Yields near 5% are becoming an important Psychological Level that is putting pressure on stock Valuations, particularly Growth Stocks.

📊 Market Overview

Markets are heading into the September 15–16 Fed meeting with inflation still elevated, oil prices back above $100, and the US 10Y Yield approaching 5%.

  • 💵 Dollar: Supported by Fed rate expectations, but limited by Tightening from other central banks

  • 💰 Gold: Under short-term Yield pressure, but still supported by Fiscal and Geopolitical Risk

  • ⛽ Oil: Brent > $107 and WTI > $103 following a Supply Shock

  • 📈 US Stocks: Earnings remain strong, but Yields near 5% are putting pressure on Valuations, particularly Technology, AI, and Growth Stocks

  • 🏦 Fed: Markets are pricing in an 86–87% probability of a 25 bps rate hike on September 15–16

📌 Weekly Takeaway

Markets are entering a point where Inflation, Oil, the Fed, and Bond Yields are becoming increasingly interconnected.

The rise in oil prices driven by a Supply Shock is adding to inflation pressure, while Yields approaching 5% are changing investors’ view of Risk Asset Valuations. Gold remains under Yield pressure despite Safe Haven Demand from Geopolitical and Fiscal risks.

The key question for markets this week is therefore not simply “Will the Fed hike rates?” but “Will this be a one-off rate hike, or the beginning of a new Tightening Cycle?”
