The Market Fears More Than High Rates; It Fears Rising System-Wide Costs

Global markets started the week on a more cautious note as US Bond Yields returned to the spotlight. The 10Y Treasury yield is near 4.7%, while the 30Y yield has moved close to its highest level in several years.

The key question is no longer simply “Will the Fed raise rates?” Instead, investors are asking whether stocks with elevated AI-driven Valuations can continue to justify their current prices if the cost of capital keeps rising.

The Macro picture is therefore testing market confidence on several fronts at once: US debt, inflation, and corporate earnings.

This week, markets will focus on three major catalysts: Jackson Hole, US PCE inflation data, and Nvidia’s earnings. Together, they could determine whether the previous Rally still has room to run or is entering a more serious consolidation phase.

Here’s a closer look at each asset class 👇

1️⃣ US Dollar 💵 | Pulling Back, But Still a Safe Haven

The US dollar weakened last week, with the DXY falling toward 98.8 amid stronger demand for gold, crypto, and alternative assets. However, the move does not necessarily signal a structural loss of the dollar’s strength.

With Bond Yields remaining elevated and trade risks increasing, particularly amid tensions between the US and Canada, the dollar continues to benefit from its role as a safe haven.

The dollar is therefore acting as a “measure of confidence in the system.” If markets believe the Fed can keep inflation under control, the dollar may remain subdued. But if Jackson Hole delivers a more Hawkish message or PCE comes in hotter than expected, the dollar could quickly regain strength.

📌 The dollar can continue to pull back, but if inflation concerns return, capital could flow back toward safer assets.

2️⃣ Gold 💰 | More Than a Safe Haven, It Is a Hedge Against Uncertainty

Gold has regained the spotlight, holding above the 4,500–4,600 zone as markets become increasingly concerned about US debt, Bond Yields, and uncertainty surrounding monetary policy.

What stands out is that gold is not rising solely because of geopolitical risk. It is also reflecting demand for an asset that is less dependent on confidence in central banks and the fiat monetary system.

In the short term, however, gold remains vulnerable to profit-taking. If PCE comes in hotter than expected and Bond Yields jump, gold could face temporary pressure.

Over the longer term, as long as markets continue to question inflation, debt, and the stability of the dollar, gold can maintain its role as a core portfolio asset rather than simply an asset used during periods of panic.

📌 Gold continues to benefit from uncertainty surrounding the system, but PCE and Bond Yields remain key short-term risks.

3️⃣ US Stocks 📈 | AI Is Still the Headline, But Nvidia Must Prove the Story With Earnings

US stocks started to weaken last week, with the Nasdaq coming under pressure from Semiconductor stocks and concerns over Valuations as markets await Nvidia’s earnings, one of the key catalysts for sentiment across the broader AI trade.

If Nvidia delivers strong results and solid Guidance, markets may regain confidence that the AI Trade still has room to run. But if the numbers are not strong enough to justify elevated valuations, markets could see a “good news that is not good enough” reaction.

This is where investors need to distinguish between a “good company” and a “good stock price.” In a higher-rate environment, Growth stocks can still rise, but they need real fundamentals behind them, including revenue, margins, Cash Flow, and tangible demand.

The US stock market is not necessarily at the end of its uptrend, but it is entering a phase where investors are becoming more selective. Stocks driven by Narrative alone may begin to struggle, while companies that can prove their earnings may continue to outperform.

📌 AI remains a key market Narrative, but from here, “the story alone is not enough.” Real revenue, earnings, and Cash Flow need to back it up.

4️⃣ Oil ⛽ | Lower, But Not Exactly Good News Yet

Oil prices eased at the beginning of the week, although tensions in the Persian Gulf and around the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved. Brent is still around $93 per barrel, high enough to put pressure on inflation and business costs.

Markets therefore cannot fully relax. If oil prices remain elevated for an extended period, the impact could spread through inflation, energy costs, transportation, and consumer purchasing power.

Oil is therefore a “silent variable the Fed needs to watch.” If oil continues to decline, equity markets will have more room to breathe and inflation pressures could ease. But if oil surges again, the market could quickly shift from waiting for good news to fearing another wave of inflation.

📌 Lower oil prices are supportive for markets, but a sharp rebound could bring inflation and economic cost pressures back into focus.

📊 Market Overview

The market is not telling investors to exit risk assets. It is telling them to “be less complacent.”

💵 The US dollar is reflecting uncertainty about the system.
💰 Gold is reflecting concerns over inflation, debt, and financial stability.
📈 US stocks are waiting for Nvidia to confirm that the AI Story is backed by real earnings.
⛽ Oil is warning that inflationary pressure can return at any time.

📌 This Week’s Takeaway

The market is not simply worried about “higher rates.” It is testing whether the cost of the entire system is rising at the same time, from the cost of capital and energy to the cost embedded in high Valuations.

The strategy for now is not to exit the market, but to hold quality without chasing prices. Focus on assets and companies with real quality, strong Cash Flow, and Pricing Power. Cash also retains its value, because markets waiting for Jackson Hole and PCE do not always reward investors who move too quickly.

💡 The key question this week is not just “What will the Fed say?” but “How much does the market still trust the Fed?”

If that confidence begins to weaken, capital will not flow into every asset at the same time. It will seek out assets that are safer, stronger, and capable of proving their value with real fundamentals.
