Fed May Raise Rates Again! Oil Above $90 Changes the Global Market Game
Global markets are entering the final week of August with a clear shift in Narrative. Investors had expected inflation to ease and the Fed to gain more room to loosen policy. That view is now being challenged as “Higher for Longer” returns, with oil prices adding another layer of risk.
The shift was driven by July PCE inflation, which rose 3.7% YoY, above the 3.6% market expectation, while Core PCE came in at 3.3%. The data shows that inflation remains sticky and well above the Fed’s 2% target.
At Jackson Hole, Kevin Warsh delivered a clear Hawkish signal, saying that if the Fed is not confident inflation is returning to 2%, there is still “work to do.” Markets responded quickly, with the probability of a 25 bps September hike rising from around 35% to 57–60%.
Treasury yields also moved higher:
-
US 2Y Yield: around 4.34%
-
US 10Y Yield: around 4.72%
-
US 30Y Yield: above 5.20%
This represents a major Repricing of Fed expectations. Markets are no longer simply pricing out rate cuts. They are now considering the possibility of another rate hike.
At the same time, renewed tensions between the US and Iran pushed Brent Crude back above $90, creating a fresh source of inflation risk.
1️⃣ Dollar 💵 | Higher Yields Return as a Tailwind
DXY rose around 0.6% to approximately 99.6, near a two-week high, while USD/JPY moved back toward 160 yen per dollar as markets increased expectations for another Fed hike.
The key mechanism is Fed Hawkish → Higher Yields → More Attractive Rate Differential → Capital Flows Back into the Dollar. Rising Geopolitical Risk is also supporting the Dollar through Safe Haven Flow.
The key indicator to watch is US 2Y Yield. If it remains above 4.3% and markets continue to price a September hike, the Dollar could maintain its Momentum. However, significantly weaker labor data could shift market focus back toward Growth Risk.
📌 Key takeaway: Higher Yields and Safe Haven Flow are supporting the Dollar, while US Labor Data could determine whether that Momentum continues.
2️⃣ Gold 💰 | Geopolitical Risk Fails to Offset Higher Yields and a Stronger Dollar
Despite rising tensions between the US and Iran, which would normally support Safe Haven Demand, Spot Gold fell to $4,430–4,440, its lowest level in nearly two weeks.
Markets are currently giving more weight to Interest Rate Risk than Geopolitical Risk. With US 10Y Yield around 4.7%, 30Y above 5.2%, a stronger Dollar and higher rate expectations, the Opportunity Cost of holding Gold is rising.
Gold’s Narrative is also shifting from Fiscal Hedge → Monetary Policy Pressure, after Warsh reinforced the Fed’s focus on inflation.
Gold may therefore remain vulnerable to further correction in the short term while Yields and the Dollar stay elevated. However, the medium-term picture remains supported by US Debt Risk, Middle East tensions and Safe Haven Demand.
📌 Key takeaway: Gold’s medium-term Fundamentals remain intact, but a Yield Shock is keeping prices under pressure in the short term.
3️⃣ Oil 🛢️ | The Most Dangerous Macro Variable Right Now
Brent Crude rose around 2–3% above $90, while WTI moved above $85 as tensions between the US and Iran escalated, particularly around the risk to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles around one-fifth of global oil supply.
Although Persian Gulf exports have recovered to around 15–16 million barrels per day, they remain below pre-war levels and shipping uncertainty remains high. The market is therefore Pricing a Supply Risk Premium into Oil.
The key risk is the Feedback Loop:
Oil ↑ → Inflation ↑ → Fed Hawkish ↑ → Yield ↑ → Dollar ↑ → Financial Conditions Tighten
If Brent remains above $90, the Fed’s policy challenge becomes even more complicated. Energy inflation could remain sticky even as economic Demand slows, increasing Stagflation Risk.
📌 Key takeaway: Oil is becoming a Macro Catalyst that can transmit pressure across Inflation, Fed policy, Yields and Financial Conditions.
4️⃣ US Stocks 📈 | AI Remains Strong, but Higher Yields Are Testing Valuations
US equities are facing a clear divergence between Micro and Macro. On the corporate side, Nvidia’s Earnings and Outlook remain strong, with Data Center Revenue more than doubling YoY and supporting the broader AI Investment Cycle.
On the Macro side, higher Yields following Warsh’s comments pressured equities:
-
S&P 500: -0.2%
-
Nasdaq: -0.5%
-
Russell 2000: -1.4%
The reaction shows that while the Earnings Story remains strong, Cost of Capital is becoming a stronger headwind. This is particularly important for Growth and Technology stocks, where higher Yields raise the Discount Rate and pressure Fair Value.
This is not yet a clear Bear Market signal. The S&P 500 remains up around 12.7% YTD, while the Nasdaq is up around 13.6%.
However, the market is moving from “buying every Dip” toward a more selective question: Are corporate Earnings strong enough to offset higher Yields? This makes Market Breadth and Earnings Quality increasingly important.
📌 Key takeaway: AI and Earnings remain supportive, but higher Yields are making Valuation a more important market driver.
🔍 What to Watch This Week
US labor data, especially Nonfarm Payrolls on Friday, will be particularly important as the Fed faces two opposing risks:
-
Inflation at 3.7% → supports a rate hike
-
A significantly weaker labor market → makes further tightening more risky
Markets will therefore look beyond whether the data is simply “good or bad” and assess how it changes the balance between Inflation Risk and Growth Risk.
📊 Market Overview
-
💵 Dollar: Supported by Higher Yields and Safe Haven Flow
-
💰 Gold: Pressured by Yields and the Dollar despite elevated Geopolitical Risk
-
🛢️ Oil: Above $90 as Supply Risk Premium rises
-
📈 US Stocks: AI and Earnings remain strong, but higher Yields pressure Valuations
📌 Weekly Takeaway
The market is shifting away from expectations of gradually easing inflation toward an environment where Higher for Longer is becoming a key risk again, with the Oil Shock adding further pressure.
With Oil, Yields and the Dollar moving higher together, the impact extends across multiple asset classes. Investors should therefore watch Fed Expectations, Bond Yields, Oil Prices and US Labor Data together to assess whether Inflation Risk or Growth Risk will drive the next Market Narrative.
